Bayern Munich and Manchester City reached the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, while Real Madrid beat Inter in a group nevertheless led by Borussia Mönchengladbach and Liverpool lost at home to Atalanta.

Group A
Bayern Munich 3: 1 Salzburg
Bayern's ruthless performance made it possible to move out of Group A. In a continuous fight, it was Salzburg who emerged from the traps faster, only Robert Lewandowski broke the deadlock right before the break. Kingsley Coman doubled the hosts' lead and Leroy Sane took over Bayern Munich after Mark Rock's firing cut them to ten. Mergim Berish's efforts were not enough to jeopardize the hosts' fourth victory out of four.

Atletico 0-0 Lokomotiv Moscow
Goalkeeper Guilherme, who came to visit, earned part of the trophies for his team in order to prevent the second-placed Spaniards from leaving Lokomotiv. The 34-year-old made a few saves to showcase an excellent rearguard. Athleti could catch up with the ball later, but Jose Maria Jimenez almost shot wide of the goal.

Inter 0: 2 Real Madrid
The 13-time winners finished second in Group B with a decisive win at the bottom club. Madrid quickly knocked out free kicks, Eden Hazard shot from the penalty spot after Nacho knocked down Nicolo Barella. Inter's hopes were further dashed when Arturo Vidal was sent off in the 33rd minute. Substitute Shot Rodrigo deflected Achraf Hakimi's shot, and the victory ended.
Key statistics : Madrid's win was their first away win against Inter in European competition: Merengue have lost five of their previous seven visits.

Monchengladbach 4: 0 Shakhtar Donetsk
Gladbach retained their place in the group summit, dominating against Shakhtar. Bril Embolo's overhead kick was one of the best, adding to Lars Stindl's penalty in the 17th minute and Niko Elvedi's powerful header. Oscar Wendt then scored his first Champions League goal from a free kick.
Key statistics: Mönchengladbach has lost only one of the last eight UEFA Champions League matches, scoring the first goals in each of the tournament's eight previous home games.

Olympiacos 0-1 Manchester City
Man. City booked a playoff spot after the hit was much stronger than one might have expected. Pep Guardiola's side scored 21 shots on goal, but only Phil Foden's neat finish in the first half - after a magnificent heel by Raheem Sterling - hit the net.
Key statistics City have now qualified in their last 16 games for eight straight seasons.

Goals in both halves by defender Zaidu Sanusi and Sergio Oliveira (his third place in the same number of Champions League appearances) mean Porto is one point away from reaching the last 16. Both teams ended the game with ten players, while Marco Gruić and Leonardo Balerdi saw the red ones. Dario Benedetto came closest to the charges of Andre Villas-Boas, hitting the post with a late header.
Key statistics : Marseille have lost a record 13 consecutive Champions League games in a competition and have yet to score in Group C.

Liverpool 0: 2 Atalanta
Liverpool's superb group record was completed by the flamboyant Atalanta. The guests got an impulse from the very beginning, and Josip Ilicic finally made a leap, piercing Alejandro Gomez's cross. Liverpool made four substitutions immediately following that goal, but were soon two behind when unmarked Robin Gosens hit the target.
Key statistics : Liverpool have not lost in 25 home games in Europe (H18, D7) before losing to Atlético in last season's round of 16 return matches; They have now lost two of their last three Champions League matches at Anfield.

Ajax 3: 1 Midtjylland
Three second-half goals put Ajax two points ahead of Group D leader Liverpool ahead of their trip to Anfield next week. Jesper Hansen's save from Zakaria Labiad kept Midtjylland between halftime, but Ryan Gravenberch's spectacular kick was quickly added by Nussar Mazraoui. David Neres shot third before Aver Mabil had one from the penalty spot.
Key statistics : Midtjylland finishes at the bottom of the section after losing all four matches.
